The topical anesthetic is applied to the tissues to prevent pain on the surface of the area. It is usually first applied to the gums to minimize the pain of an injected anesthetic. An injected anesthetic is applied directly into mouth tissues in order to numb the area in preparation for filling cavities, root canals, crowns and periodontal disease.
